Industrial IoT

What Is Industrial IoT (IIoT)?

Industrial IoT (IIoT) is the use of connected sensors, machines and control systems in industrial settings such as manufacturing, energy and utilities to monitor, analyse and improve operations. It builds on existing automation (PLCs and SCADA) rather than replacing it.

How IIoT differs from consumer IoT

Consumer IoT Industrial IoT
Priority Convenience, cost Reliability, safety, uptime
Lifetime Few years 10-20+ years of equipment life
Protocols Wi-Fi, BLE, MQTT, HTTP Modbus, OPC UA, fieldbus, MQTT
Failure impact Inconvenience Downtime, safety or quality incidents
Network Home network Segmented OT networks with IT/OT boundaries

Typical IIoT use cases

  • Condition monitoring: temperature, vibration and current to spot abnormal behaviour.
  • Energy monitoring: consumption by line, shift or machine.
  • Asset tracking and utilisation: where equipment is and how it is used.
  • Quality and traceability: linking process data to batches.

Key technologies

  • Modbus (RTU and TCP): a simple, widely supported protocol for reading registers from devices.
  • OPC UA: a platform-independent standard (IEC 62541) with a rich information model and built-in security.
  • MQTT: often used to move data from a gateway to analytics and dashboards.
  • PLC and SCADA: the established control and supervision layers. See PLC, SCADA and IoT.

Security matters more

Connecting plant equipment increases risk. Practices include network segmentation, least-privilege access, avoiding direct internet exposure and careful change control. The IoT Cybersecurity course covers the basics.

Learning Industrial IoT

Learn IoT fundamentals first, then sensing and protocols. Our Industrial IoT training course builds a monitoring prototype with Modbus and MQTT. Prototype work is not a substitute for live-plant safety training.
