About this course

ESP32 and ESP8266 are among the most widely used microcontrollers for connected projects because they combine a capable processor with built-in Wi-Fi, and in the ESP32 case Bluetooth Low Energy. This course teaches you to build wireless nodes that connect reliably, report sensor data and can be controlled remotely.

You learn connection handling and reconnection logic, local web servers, MQTT and HTTP communication, over-the-air updates and power considerations. The goal is a device that behaves well on a real network, not only on a classroom desk.

Who is this course for?

  • Learners who have completed Arduino basics
  • Engineering students planning a connected-device project
  • Developers moving from software to hardware
  • Makers building home-automation and monitoring devices

Eligibility

For learners with basic microcontroller experience or who have completed an Arduino-level course. Exact eligibility is confirmed at enrollment.

Prerequisites recommended

Arduino-style programming (variables, functions, reading sensors). Basic understanding of Wi-Fi networks.

Syllabus: 7 modules

1ESP32 and ESP8266 platform
  • Architecture differences: cores, memory, radios, GPIO capabilities
  • Toolchains: Arduino core and an introduction to ESP-IDF
  • Pin constraints, strapping pins and boot behaviour
2Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Station and access-point modes
  • Reliable connection and reconnection patterns
  • Provisioning and storing credentials safely
3Local control and web interfaces
  • Hosting a web page and REST endpoints on the device
  • JSON handling
  • mDNS and discovery basics
4Messaging with MQTT and HTTP
  • MQTT topics, QoS and retained messages
  • Last Will and Testament for device presence
  • HTTP requests to APIs and webhook-style integrations
5Bluetooth Low Energy

  • Choosing between Wi-Fi and BLE
6Power, updates and robustness
  • Deep sleep and wake sources for battery devices
  • Over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates
  • Watchdogs and failure handling
7Project
  • Design a sensor node with local display and cloud reporting
  • Test on a real network and handle failures
  • Document wiring, topics and operating instructions

Tools and technologies covered

  • ESP32 DevKit
  • ESP8266 (NodeMCU)
  • Arduino core for ESP32
  • MQTT with a broker
  • HTTP/JSON APIs
  • BLE
  • OTA updates

Practical exercises and project examples

  • Wi-Fi temperature and humidity node publishing over MQTT
  • Web-controlled relay board with status feedback
  • Soil-moisture sensor node with deep-sleep scheduling
  • BLE beacon-style presence indicator

These are example exercises and project concepts for this course, not a record of projects completed by past learners.

Outcomes, career directions and limits

Skills you should be able to demonstrate

  • Build ESP32 nodes that join Wi-Fi and recover from disconnections
  • Publish and subscribe with MQTT using sensible topic design
  • Expose a simple local web interface and JSON API from a device
  • Reduce power use with sleep modes and explain the trade-offs
  • Update device firmware over the air

Relevant career directions

  • IoT device development trainee roles after further practice
  • Home-automation and prototype development
  • Foundation for cloud-connected product development

What this course does not do

  • Security hardening and production certification are introduced but not covered in full; see the IoT Cybersecurity course.
  • RF design and antenna engineering are out of scope.

Career outcomes depend on your skills, portfolio, experience and employer requirements. No course can guarantee a job.

ESP32, ESP8266 and Wireless IoT Training: frequently asked questions

Should I learn ESP32 or ESP8266?

ESP32 is generally the better choice for new projects because it has more resources, Bluetooth and more peripherals. ESP8266 is still common in existing low-cost products, so the course explains the differences.

Is ESP32 programmed in Arduino or in its own framework?

It can be programmed with the Arduino core, which is what most learners start with, or with Espressif's ESP-IDF for more control. The course starts with the Arduino core and introduces ESP-IDF concepts.

Do I need a cloud account?

You can complete most exercises with a local or public MQTT broker. Any cloud accounts used are explained at the start of the relevant module.

Does this course cover LoRa?

LoRaWAN is covered conceptually in the IoT Networking and Wireless Communication course rather than as a hands-on module here.
