About this course

IoT Fundamentals is the starting point for learners who want to understand what the Internet of Things actually is before choosing a hardware platform. The course explains the full chain of an IoT system: sensing, processing, connectivity, cloud storage and the application a person finally sees.

Instead of memorising definitions, you work with small, concrete examples such as reading a temperature value, sending it over a network and displaying it. By the end you can describe an IoT architecture clearly, choose sensible components for a simple problem and decide which specialised course to take next.

Who is this course for?

  • First- and second-year engineering and diploma students
  • BCA, B.Sc. IT and B.Sc. Electronics students
  • Freshers exploring IoT as a career direction
  • Working professionals from non-embedded backgrounds

Eligibility

Open to learners who have completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification, or are enrolled in a diploma or degree programme. Exact eligibility is confirmed at enrollment.

Prerequisites recommended

None required. Comfort using a computer and basic school-level maths and physics is sufficient.

Syllabus: 8 modules

1What is IoT and where it is used
  • Definition of IoT and how it differs from the traditional internet
  • Typical applications: homes, agriculture, industry, healthcare, cities
  • Benefits, limitations and common misconceptions
2IoT architecture
  • Device, gateway, network, cloud and application layers
  • Edge versus cloud processing
  • Reference models and how to read an architecture diagram
3Sensors and actuators
  • Common sensors: temperature, humidity, distance, light, motion, gas
  • Analog and digital signals, sampling and calibration basics
  • Actuators: relays, LEDs, buzzers, motors
4Microcontrollers and development boards
  • Microcontroller versus microprocessor
  • Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi: where each fits
  • Basic circuit building with breadboards and safe handling
5Connectivity and protocols
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, LoRaWAN and cellular at a conceptual level
  • HTTP, MQTT and CoAP: what each is good at
  • IP addressing basics and data formats such as JSON
6Cloud, data and dashboards
  • What a broker and a cloud platform do
  • Storing and visualising sensor data
  • Alerts, thresholds and simple automation rules
7Security and responsible design
  • Why IoT devices are attractive targets
  • Passwords, updates and basic network hygiene
  • Privacy considerations when collecting sensor data
8Mini project and next steps
  • Plan and document a small sensor-to-dashboard project
  • Present the architecture and explain design choices
  • Choose a learning path: Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi or Industrial IoT

Tools and technologies covered

  • Arduino-compatible boards
  • ESP32 development board
  • Common sensors (DHT, ultrasonic, LDR)
  • MQTT concepts
  • Cloud dashboards (concept level)
  • Breadboard and multimeter basics

Practical exercises and project examples

  • Draw and explain the architecture of a smart-home temperature system
  • Read a temperature sensor and display the value
  • Design (on paper) a soil-moisture monitoring system
  • Compare three protocols for a given use case

These are example exercises and project concepts for this course, not a record of projects completed by past learners.

Outcomes, career directions and limits

Skills you should be able to demonstrate

  • Explain the layers of an IoT system and the role of each component
  • Choose suitable sensors and a board for a simple monitoring problem
  • Read a basic circuit diagram and build a simple sensor circuit
  • Describe how MQTT and HTTP differ in IoT use
  • Identify basic security risks in an IoT deployment

Relevant career directions

  • Foundation for IoT technician or trainee roles after further practice
  • Stepping stone to embedded, cloud or automation specialisations
  • Useful background for technical sales and support in IoT products

What this course does not do

  • This is a foundation course. It does not by itself prepare you for an advanced IoT engineering role.
  • Depth in programming is limited; later courses cover firmware and software in detail.

Career outcomes depend on your skills, portfolio, experience and employer requirements. No course can guarantee a job.

IoT Fundamentals and Basic Training: frequently asked questions

Do I need to know programming before joining?

No. The course focuses on concepts and simple guided exercises. Programming is introduced gradually and developed further in the Arduino and ESP32 courses.

Is this course suitable if I am not from an electronics background?

Yes. The electronics used is introductory. Learners from computer science, IT and other streams can follow it with the guidance provided.

Which course should I take after this?

If you enjoy hardware, continue with Arduino and then ESP32. If you prefer Linux and Python, consider Raspberry Pi. If you are interested in factories and machines, look at Industrial IoT.

Will I build anything practical?

Yes. The course includes guided exercises and a small documented mini project so that concepts are tied to something you can show and explain.
