IoT Projects
Realistic IoT project concepts for students and early-career learners, with the typical hardware stack and the course that teaches each.
A project is the fastest way to find out whether you really understand a topic. The concepts below range from a first sensor node to an industrial monitoring prototype. For a longer list organised by skill level, read IoT Project Ideas for Students by Skill Level.
Sample project concepts. These are example project ideas used for teaching and planning, not a record of projects completed by students.
Smart temperature monitoring
Read a temperature and humidity sensor, show values locally and publish them to a simple dashboard.
Typical stack: ESP32, DHT22 or SHT31, MQTT
Wi-Fi-enabled home automation
Switch relays from a phone or web page and add schedules and manual overrides.
Typical stack: ESP32, relay module, web server
Soil moisture and irrigation monitoring
Measure soil moisture, log readings and trigger a pump with simple threshold and hysteresis logic.
Typical stack: ESP32, capacitive soil sensor, pump relay
Water-level monitoring
Track tank level with an ultrasonic or pressure sensor and raise alerts at configurable levels.
Typical stack: Arduino or ESP32, ultrasonic sensor, buzzer
MQTT-based remote dashboard
Publish sensor topics to a broker and visualise live data in Node-RED.
Typical stack: ESP32, MQTT broker, Node-RED
Raspberry Pi sensor gateway
Collect data from several nodes, buffer it locally and forward it to a cloud endpoint.
Typical stack: Raspberry Pi, Python, MQTT
Industrial machine monitoring prototype
Monitor vibration and temperature on a demo motor and show health indicators on a dashboard.
Typical stack: ESP32, accelerometer, Modbus or MQTT
Sensor anomaly detection
Detect unusual sensor behaviour with statistical thresholds and a simple model.
Typical stack: Python, pandas, scikit-learn
Need guided project support?
If you are a final-year or pre-final-year student, the IoT Final-Year Project Training course helps you scope, build, test, document and present a project you can explain with confidence.
